UNASUR’s Electoral Mission for the 2017 General Elections and Referendum on Tax Havens held on Sunday, February 19, expresses its recognition of the recent declaration by the President of the Ecuador’s National Electoral Council, Dr. Juan Pablo Pozo, on behalf of this institution, following the announcement of results with 99.5% of records counted and processed related to the election of President and Vice President of the Republic.
This official announcement by the competent authority calls the Ecuadorian people and political actors to respect the information provided and to accept the results which express the will of the people. In this context, UNASUR’s Electoral Mission ratifies its commitment to promote, defend, and protect the democratic order, as a vital component to preserve the Rule of law and its institutions, as well as the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens.
As stated last February 20, the Electoral Mission carried out activities in Ecuador through technical delegates who witnessed the process of results’ transmission and announcement, in addition to the scrutiny hearings in the Provincial Delegation of Pichincha and the CNE.
UNASUR’s Electoral Mission reiterates its call to the citizens, political organizations, and candidates to participate in the run-off election, to maintain confidence in the electoral institutions, while emphasizing that the National Electoral Council of Ecuador has proceeded in compliance with the procedures set forth in the Constitution, Democracy Code, and the legislation in force.
As it is widely known, Ecuador officially invited UNASUR to participate, through its Electoral Council, in the 2017 general elections and referendum. The Electoral Mission, led by the Special Representative and former President of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, and the General Coordinator and the President of Colombia’s National Electoral Council, Alexander Vega, ratifies its decision to be present once more in Ecuadorian territory on the occasion of the run-off voting scheduled for the election of President and Vice-President.
Consequently, and as it has done to date, the Electoral Mission once again reiterates its willingness to act with impartiality, objectivity, independence, legality, non-interference, and transparency, in compliance with the Criteria and Regulations governing UNASUR ‘s Electoral Missions.
