UNASUR’s Electoral Mission for Ecuador headed by former President of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, as Special Representative, and President of National Electoral Council (CNE, Spanish acronym) of Colombia, Alexander Vega, as General Coordinator, began activities this Monday, February 13th, meeting with the National Directorate of Registry Office, National Institute of Statistics and Censuses as well as people in charge of electoral communication and information, training and voter register of Ecuador’s CNE.
On Tuesday the 14th, it continued the working agenda with people in charge of inclusion policies, voting of people held in custody, abroad voting and the Coordinator of CNE’s Electoral Processes.
This Wednesday the 15th, the Electoral Mission joined the official program of the National Electoral Council for members of the International Observation Program. In the course of the day, and as established in the working protocol, meetings will be held with the Plenary of National Electoral Council, Election Disputes Tribunal and Constitutional Court of Ecuador.
In addition, along with CNE, the Mission was publicly introduced, and a small group was prepared to take part in the February 16th voting of people held in custody without conviction.
On Thursday 16th, it will hold internal meetings, a gathering of UNASUR’s Ambassadors accredited in Quito, a press conference, and make contact with representatives of political parties to learn about their position regarding the electoral aspects of the process.
Likewise, a panel is planned with the participation of representatives of the media, pollsters and the academic field.
On Friday the 17th, the Mission, which will be present in 12 provinces of the country, will be participate with the “Vote at home” electoral activities, and later on internal meetings.
On Saturday the 18th, it will hold gatherings with National Electoral Council Provincial Delegations; security forces; review and preparation of deployment routes; and make contact with political parties and candidates.
On Sunday the 19th, the day of general elections and referendum, the General Coordinator, Alexander Vega, will participate in the electoral process inauguration in Quito, and together with all the members of the Mission, witness the different phases of this polling day, including the opening, set up, suffrage, vote, closing, scrutiny and transmission of the results.
Equally, the Special Representative, former President, Jose Mujica, who is to arrive in Guayaquil on Friday, February 17th, to fulfill an important agenda in that city, where he will meet with the President of the Republic of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, CNE’s President, Juan Pablo Pozo, the President of the Election Disputes Tribunal, Patricio Baca and with different authorities and presidential candidates.
On Election Day, he will visit different voting centers and witness the closure of ballot boxes, and then will be transferred to the headquarters of Guayas’ Provincial Delegation of CNE, where he will inform on the Mission’s activities and will learn details throughout this electoral process.
Finally, on Monday the 20th, and in compliance with UNASUR’s electoral regulations, the Mission will submit the Preliminary Report to the National Electoral Council.
